Meet your Student Senate President and Vice President

Hi Everyone,  We are your Student Class President and Vice President for 2020-2021.  If you are returning, welcome back! And if you are just starting, we are happy to have you joining us this year. We know there are a lot of challenges with coming to school during a pandemic, but we want you to know the college is working hard to protect you from the effects of COVID-19.  Things are going to be different in the fall in terms of classes and clubs, but we are very excited to see the community come together and flourish through this hard time. Just remember that the faculty and staff is always here for as are we. WE ARE YOUR VOICE so please do not be afraid to email us if you have a concern you would like us to bring to the attention of leadership.  “No matter what you're going through, there's a light at the end of the tunnel.”- Demi Lovato  With Love,  Dharma and Devon  Contact us at:   Dharma: Dparadis997@students.ccsnh.edu  Devon: Dvenne859@students.ccsnh.edu

What it is like to be a Student at NCC?

(Posted on behalf of Zander Johnson) Have you ever wanted to get involved or are looking for ways to enhance your college experience?  I have been there as well. When joining NCC, I had already had some college experience under my belt, but I wanted to make sure I was making the most of my time here. Personally, I think that college is way more than just going to class and getting your diploma. College is about the connections that you make and the experiences that you have. It is everything from the first time that you walk through the school doors until the day you walk off the other side of that stage, the friends you make, the clubs you are a part of, the study groups you participate in, and so much more.  In my time here at NCC, I have strived to make the most of these experiences. I have been in the GSA, Student Senate, as well as started the Entertainment Appreciation Club where we brought live music to the NCC campus. I have now had the lucky opportunity to joi

Thank You NCC, Love, Kati

Good morning NCC! This week, as you know, is our last week of the semester. For me, this means my last week of college (at least for the foreseeable future) and my last day as a Marketing and Communications intern at NCC.  First I want to say that starting this student blog has been such a fun experience for me. I have blogged before, both for school and for fun, but it’s been a privilege working to create a space for students to come, read, and share content that they and their peers have created. I know that the blog hasn’t grown very much since we’ve started it, and I didn’t expect it to. But I hope that it at least served a purpose for some of you, and I know that it will live on past my time here at NCC. What’s Next for the Blog? The NCC Students blog will be taken over in the fall by a new student editor. Although we do not have an individual to take it over yet, I trust that someone talented and hardworking will step in and make it even better than I could. Over the summer, facu

Graduation

Hey everyone! First of all, congratulations to all of the NCC 2020 graduates! I’m sure this is anything but what you imagined when you pictured your college graduation, but alas, here we are. I know how tough it is for everyone who is supposed to be graduating this Spring to realize that they aren’t going to have a ceremony at the end of the semester. I am right there with you. You were not required to go to college. Graduating college was a choice you made to better yourself and brighten your future. I know that your friends and family are proud of that choice, and want to celebrate with you. So, my question is, what will you be doing to celebrate your graduation in May, without hosting a huge get together? A Zoom party? Making a candlelight dinner with your significant other? Having a friend over for drinks and to reminisce? Whatever it is you’re doing, I’d love to hear about it. Please share your ideas in the comments for those not so creatively inclined. Share your plans,

Senior Send Off Video

A message to the graduating class, I know how tough it’s been for everyone in this time. For other seniors, like myself, it’s a little disappointing knowing we won’t be having a graduation ceremony in May. Because of this, I wanted to do something special. I’m hoping that as a graduating class, we can put together a nice video as a reminder of the unique situation that we’ve been in, and that through all of this, we have still pulled through, and are all (soon-to-be) college graduates. I recognize that as a community college, students are of all different ages and phases of life. I think this makes us all the more powerful as a class, and makes our story all the more interesting and meaningful. I hope to put a piece of that story into a short clip for all of us to have and remember for many years to come. If you want to participate, I am just asking that you send in a short video clip, or a quote or short sentiment accompanied with a photo of yourself. Video clips are, of

The Social Media That Connects Us

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have been all over social media since this whole thing started. Not only am I relying on it for entertainment, but, of course, for social connections as well. Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok were big as it was, but our generation has taken it to the next level since being quarantined.  One that has blown up, in particular, is TikTok. What started as a cute “high school thing” that was supposed to be a revamp of Musical.ly with a little bit of Vine has turned into a place we all go for laughs and entertainment. Don’t even try to convince me that you don’t. Group hangout apps like House Party and Zoom have been used more and more since this whole thing started too. Not only are we using Zoom for school, but also to chat with our friends and host “hangouts” for social groups that would normally meet in person. Individuals can be as connected or isolated as they want to be, depending on how they chose to use technology.  So, I wa

Friends Music Video

Happy Monday everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that we are doing a school-wide music video to the song “I’ll Be There for You” by the Rembrandts. We will be using the 50-second clip that is used for the opening of the show Friends! I’ve attached some guidelines for the video. In general, we’re just looking for fun dance/lip-synch clips that we can cut together to make a music video! This is for students and staff, so please, get involved! Please be sure to follow these guidelines so that your video will be included! Friends Theme Music Video Guidelines: The music video will be to the song “I’ll Be There For You.” We will be using the 50 second clip from the song that is used in the show Friends. Here is the link to the clip on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLisEEwYZvw When you record yourself, feel free to play the music out loud or in headphones. Sing & dance along with friends, pets, or family. Just have fun with it! You can sing, dan

Rediscovering the Simple Things

When's the last time you sat down with a good book? I mean a really, really good book. One that you sat reading for hours, unable to put it down. Everyone's talking about being productive or focusing on self-care during this time. Most of us do have extra time, but it's okay not to want to spend it learning a new skill, building a business, or even doing much of anything. It’s hard not to spend it getting sucked into binging Netflix shows and scrolling on social media. Although neither one of these things is necessarily bad, when it’s all you’re doing, it starts to get pretty toxic for your mental health. What if instead of trying to focus on being productive, or finding ourselves, what if we just decided to go back to the basics? What if we went back in time a little bit (well maybe a lot) to that point in life when we couldn't wait for mom or dad to read us our favorite story? What if we could rediscover the innocent passion, zest, and love for life that we used t

No Home Gym? No Problem!

During this difficult time of social distancing and staying at home to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, it can be tough to get your normal activity and exercise in. Most businesses are either closed or have gone remote, and gyms/fitness centers are no exception. Most of us are used to going to the gym and using the equipment there, whether it be a cardio machine, weighted cable or plate loaded machines, the vast free weights, or any other implements typically only found in a gym. So when we are forced to stay home and cannot access our normal equipment for our normal routine, we can do one of a few things: become restless, anxious, and drive ourselves (and maybe even loved ones at home) crazy because we aren’t sure what to do, or get lazy and do nothing, losing any progress we’ve made while becoming sore and de-trained. OR, we can compromise and work with what we have at home and still get a killer workout in! You may not have much, if at all, for “traditional” workout equi

Mackenzie Murphy on "Snacks for Those Who Have Our Backs"

I've always been someone who has been involved in the community. I have always had a passion for making a difference and giving back to those in need. Much of my involvement and love for serving others, stems from the way I was raised. I am one of six kids, with the last three of us having been adopted. My mom is a retired nurse and worked for the State of NH, so I was raised with foster children and teenagers living with us for much of my childhood. Through the years, I have learned to never judge a book by its cover, to always help out those who may need a helping hand and make sure I give back to those who give so much, as my parents have been shining examples throughout my life. Through my involvement, I have served on many different community boards and organizations and tried to lend a hand whenever I saw the opportunity. However, I always felt like I wasn't doing "enough" and wanted to make a bigger impact. The perfect moment came when I was on a Zoom ca

Snacks for Our Heroes

Good morning friends! Today I have been asked to share a really important announcement about how NCC is helping our NH healthcare workers during this stressful time. Enrollment specialist and NCC alumn Mackenzie Murphy and her mother, NH State Representative Nancy Murphy have set up a food drive and will be bringing snacks to health care workers. Most health care workers hardly have the time to take a lunch break, especially when hospitals are busy like they are now. NCC is working together to help bring our beloved health care workers a quick bite in between patients. If you’d like to donate, you can drop snacks off at the NCC Campus. There will be two containers on at the front of the building; one is for drinks, and one for food. If you would like to make arrangements for someone to come pick it up instead, you can email Nancy Murphy at nancy.murphy@leg.state.nh.us or text Mackenzie at 603-493-1508. Please note: all packages must be sealed by the manufacturer, and must

COVID-19 Free Health and Wellness Resources

A message from the Director of the Wellness Center and Intermural Activities, Alex Wunderlich: I hope you are all staying healthy and well during this challenging time of social distancing and making the transition to remote classes and work. All of these sudden life changes can make for a stressful and challenging time, one of these changes is finding new ways to keep active and practice self-care for yourself and loved ones. To help you with this, below, you will find a list of some resources (websites, apps, etc.) that are offering free access and content during this COVID-19 pandemic. Whether you are still going into work or working from home, it is a great time to focus on your health and or start a new wellness plan. Especially if your daily routines have changed, the difficulty most of us encounter when trying to start a new fitness or diet plan is now not as great a problem. Now the most significant issue is finding things you can do without leaving home or wellness solu

Life During COVID-19

Hello there, my name is Devon, I am a Student Senate Treasurer, a part-time teacher, and someone who has been at NCC for a long time. This is my second degree at NCC, and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. But boy this semester is really testing me. This has been an interesting couple of weeks, hasn't it? It's hard to believe we have not been on campus in 2 weeks. I honestly think I took campus life for granted before all of this. I miss seeing all the smiling (and sometimes not so smiling) faces walking around campus. I miss being able to have face to face conversations with classmates and professors when it comes to classwork and assignments. And I really miss being able to spend time with the rest of the student senate execs.  I am beyond grateful for being healthy right now, having a roof over my head, and having food in my kitchen. You really do not realize just how much privilege you have until something like this happens and you suddenly can not visit the

Staying Organized

With the transition to online learning, staying organized is going to be difficult. Here are three quick tips to keeping yourself organized with this new platform! 1. Keep a Planner When you’re working from home, it can be easy to forget what time, day, or even week it is. Keeping a planner and updating it daily is vital for keeping track of due dates and schedules. When you don’t have a regular class schedule, it’s important to keep a planner so that you know when your Zoom meetings are, when your assignments are due, and how that fits in with the rest of your schedule. There are so many online planner resources if you prefer to do it on your phone or computer; otherwise, Amazon has excellent planner options as well. 2. Continue to Use a School Bag I know it sounds kind of strange to use a bag when you’re staying home all day, but hear me out. If you still keep all of your stuff in your bag, not only have you contained the mess of schoolwork that you have, but y

Message From Robyn Griswold

Hey everyone! I have asked to share this message from the VP of Academic Affairs.  Hello NCC Students! My name is Robyn Griswold and I’m the Vice President of Academic Affairs at NCC. As noted in the document,  Adjusting your study habits during COVID-19 : “Things may feel out-of-control right now. You may be facing a lot of unknowns and disruptions. Try to be patient with yourself, your classmates, and your instructors during this time. Take care of your well-being first. Making a plan and adjusting your studying may help you feel even a little sense of control.” I recommend you take a few minutes to read through more of this document by clicking  here . You’ll find helpful strategies and links to resources for making a successful adjustment to online learning.
